Second-seeded Alexander Zverev made a strong start at the Australian Open, defeating France’s Lucas Pouille in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday. The German, a Grand Slam runner-up, showcased his ambition to claim his first major title at Melbourne Park this year, dominating the match with powerful shots and decisive plays.
Zverev secured the opening set with an inside-out forehand winner and continued to apply pressure, breaking Pouille early in the second set to build a 3-1 lead. Despite Pouille’s efforts, Zverev maintained control, sealing his victory with an ace and booking his spot in the second round against Spain’s Pedro Martinez, who advanced after Luciano Darderi retired due to injury.
In contrast, China’s rising star Bu Yunchaokete faced a tough challenge in his first-round match against qualifier Hady Habib, losing in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-6(6). The 22-year-old Chinese player is still seeking his maiden Grand Slam victory after making his debut at last year’s US Open.
Bu’s match was delayed due to heavy rain in Melbourne, pushing the start time to the evening. Despite entering as the favorite, he couldn’t overcome Habib’s strong serves and resilience. Habib made history as the first Lebanese man to reach a Grand Slam singles draw, advancing after two hours and 31 minutes on court.
