Nawaf Salam, president of the International Court of Justice, has been appointed by Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun as the country’s new prime minister. The announcement was made on Monday, as reported by local TV channel Al Jadeed.
In parliamentary consultations convened by President Aoun, Salam secured 84 votes out of 128. Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati received nine votes, while 35 lawmakers abstained from naming any candidate to lead the new government.
Salam’s appointment comes at a critical time for Lebanon, which is grappling with economic challenges and seeking political stability. His international experience and legal expertise are seen by many as valuable assets in steering the country toward recovery.
The new prime minister is now tasked with forming a government capable of implementing reforms and addressing the pressing issues facing the nation. Observers are watching closely to see how Salam will navigate the complex political landscape and work with various factions to achieve unity and progress.
