Britain has imposed a ban on imports of hams and various other meat and dairy products from Germany to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease after a confirmed case near Berlin.
On Tuesday, the British government announced the ban as a precautionary measure. While there are currently no cases of the disease in the UK, officials stated that the move is essential to protect British farmers and their livelihoods.
“This step will help stop the disease from spreading and safeguard our agricultural sector,” a government spokesperson said.
German authorities confirmed last Friday the first outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the country in nearly 40 years. The case was identified in a herd of water buffalo on the outskirts of Berlin.
The ban reflects the UK’s commitment to preventing the introduction of livestock diseases and maintaining the health of its farming industry.
