Chinese, Japanese Ruling Parties Commit to Closer Dialogue

The ruling parties of the Chinese mainland and Japan have agreed to maintain close dialogue and communication, regardless of the challenges facing bilateral relations.

At the ninth meeting of the China-Japan ruling parties exchange mechanism held in Beijing on Tuesday, representatives from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito Party discussed ways to enhance mutual trust and cooperation.

Both sides recognized the significant role the exchange mechanism has played since its inception in 2006, guiding the development of China-Japan relations. After a hiatus of over six years, they welcomed the resumption of inter-party talks.

Focusing on their mission and responsibilities as ruling parties, they engaged in candid discussions about maintaining international order amid global upheavals. They agreed to adhere to the principles established in the four China-Japan political documents and follow the direction set by their leaders.

The parties pledged joint efforts to advance strategic and mutually beneficial relations, aiming to build a constructive and stable relationship that meets the demands of the new era. They emphasized the importance of enhancing mutual understanding and strengthening exchanges between seasoned politicians and young leaders.

Addressing pressing concerns, they exchanged views on issues like the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and seafood imports. They agreed to implement the consensus reached by their governments, accelerate communication, and properly address each other’s concerns.

Furthermore, both sides confirmed plans to promote practical cooperation and agreed in principle to hold the 10th meeting of the exchange mechanism in Japan this autumn.

High-Level Meetings to Foster Cooperation

China’s top political advisor Wang Huning met with the Japanese delegation, led by Secretary General Hiroshi Moriyama of the Liberal Democratic Party and Secretary General Makoto Nishida of the Komeito Party. Wang emphasized the importance of delivering on the common understandings between the two countries’ leaders.

“The ruling parties should carry out in-depth exchanges and make joint efforts to develop bilateral relations, promoting the prosperity and development of the region and the world,” said Wang, who is also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

The Japanese representatives echoed the sentiment, stating that Japan and China are important neighbors. They expressed willingness to promote people-to-people exchanges at all levels, including among young parliamentarians and local leaders, to reduce differences and promote cooperation.

Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, also met with the Japanese delegation. He noted that China-Japan relations face important opportunities for improvement and development.

“It is hoped that both sides will make good use of the exchange mechanism between the ruling parties and play a positive role in the development of China-Japan relations,” Wang Yi said.

The Japanese side expressed readiness to work with China to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, strengthen dialogue between the ruling parties, and achieve concrete results in practical cooperation across various fields.
