On Thursday, January 16, China Media Group (CMG) launched the “Prelude to the Spring Festival Gala” in New York City, marking the start of a global series of celebrations for the upcoming Lunar New Year. The event brought together nearly 200 guests, including high-profile diplomats and cultural figures.
Shen Haixiong, President and Editor-in-Chief of CMG, addressed attendees via video message, emphasizing the significance of the Spring Festival as one of the most important traditional festivals for the Chinese people. “From being a ‘Chinese New Year’ to becoming a ‘Global New Year,’ the Spring Festival now shines with unique charm in the flourishing garden of world civilizations,” Shen remarked.
Xie Feng, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, highlighted the festival’s core values of peace, harmony, and unity. He expressed hope for enhanced mutual understanding between China and the United States, stating that stabilizing and improving relations serves the common interests of both nations.
The event featured captivating performances, including songs by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and a collaborative piece by American singer Mandy Harvey with students from the Center for International Disability Advocacy and Diplomacy at St. Cloud State University. A fashion show showcased designs inspired by Chinese culture, blending tradition with modern artistry.
Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, noted that the Spring Festival’s recent addition to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity highlights its global cultural significance. He called for unity and cooperation in facing global challenges, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and mutual learning among civilizations.
