Taliban led Afghan Govt Announces Prisoner Swap with Us

Taliban and U.S. Conduct Prisoner Swap Mediated by Qatar

The Taliban-led Afghan government announced on Tuesday that an Afghan fighter imprisoned in the United States for nearly two decades has been released in a prisoner swap mediated by Qatar. The Afghan Foreign Ministry confirmed that Khan Mohammad, who had been serving a life sentence, has returned to Afghanistan in exchange for American detainees held by the Taliban.

“An Afghan fighter, Khan Mohammad, imprisoned in America, has been released in exchange for American citizens and returned to the country,” the ministry stated. Mohammad was arrested almost 20 years ago during the early years of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan.

The ministry praised Qatar’s role in facilitating the exchange and expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the United States. “We consider such steps a good start for normalizing relations between the two countries,” the statement added.

This prisoner swap marks a significant development in the relationship between the United States and Afghanistan since the Taliban assumed control in 2021. Qatar has frequently acted as a mediator in negotiations involving the Taliban, including talks that led to the 2020 agreement for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.
