Gaza City — The Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas has released a second group of Israeli hostages, freeing four young women in Gaza on Saturday. The women were handed over to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at Palestine Square in Gaza City.
Eyewitnesses reported that members of Hamas delivered the hostages to the ICRC, marking a significant step in the ongoing negotiations between Hamas and Israel. The four women, identified as Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, and Naama Levy, appeared to be in good health, walking and smiling as they were transferred.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA) confirmed the release in a joint statement, acknowledging the efforts of the ICRC in facilitating the handover. The four women, aged between 19 and 20, were reportedly abducted on October 7, 2023, during an attack on an Israeli military base near the Gaza Strip border.
“We are relieved to welcome back our citizens,” the IDF stated. “They will receive medical evaluations and be reunited with their families.”
This release is part of a broader prisoner-hostage exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel, which includes a temporary ceasefire. As part of the deal, Israel has also released 200 Palestinian prisoners. The ceasefire and exchange were reached through mediation by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, aiming to de-escalate tensions after months of conflict.
After the latest release, approximately 90 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, according to Israeli authorities. Negotiations are ongoing to secure their freedom.
