A fierce clash between paramilitary forces and militants in southwestern Pakistan has resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers and 12 militants, the military’s media wing announced on Saturday.
The confrontation took place in the restive region of Balochistan, an area that has long grappled with insurgency and violence. Paramilitary troops were conducting a routine operation when they encountered heavily armed militants, leading to an intense exchange of fire.
“During an intelligence-based operation, our forces engaged with a group of militants,” the military’s statement read. “Eighteen of our brave soldiers embraced martyrdom, and 12 militants were neutralized.”
Balochistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, is Pakistan’s largest province by area but remains its most sparsely populated and underdeveloped. The region has witnessed numerous attacks by separatist groups and militants over the years, aiming to destabilize the area.
The increase in violence has raised concerns among local communities and authorities alike. Security forces have intensified operations to curb militant activities and restore peace in the region.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The government has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
The loss of life has sparked a wave of condolences across the nation, with many taking to social media to express their grief and support for the families of the fallen soldiers.
