Mexican President Says Mexico Will Retaliate Against Us Tariffs

Mexico Vows Retaliation Against U.S. Tariffs Amid Rising Tensions

Mexico City — Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday. She also rejected Washington’s accusations that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, calling them “slander.”

The announcement comes after President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sheinbaum emphasized her government’s desire for collaboration over confrontation with its northern neighbor.

“We categorically reject the White House’s slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,” Sheinbaum wrote.

Sheinbaum, who has consistently sought to ease tensions with the U.S., highlighted her administration’s efforts since taking office in October. These include seizing 20 million doses of the synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on 155 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 106.5 billion U.S. dollars) worth of U.S. goods in response to the American tariffs. “Thirty billion dollars’ worth of goods will take effect on Tuesday, while the remaining 125 billion dollars will be implemented in 21 days,” Trudeau said at a news conference.

The escalating trade tensions among the neighboring countries have raised concerns about potential impacts on the global economy. Observers are watching closely to see how these developments will affect international trade agreements and relations in the coming weeks.
