Trump Pauses Tariffs on Canada Mexico for a Month

Trump Delays Tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 Days

Washington, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a 30-day pause on the tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico, aiming to negotiate final economic deals with both neighboring countries.

“The tariffs on Canada announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to assess whether a final economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social. “Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure northern border and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like fentanyl.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed the sentiment, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Just had a good call with President Trump. Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”

Trudeau outlined Canada’s commitment to bolstering border security, including implementing a $1.3 billion plan to reinforce the northern border with new helicopters, technology, and nearly 10,000 frontline personnel. “In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a fentanyl czar, list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 surveillance at the border, and launch a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering,” he added.

On the southern front, Trump reported a “very friendly conversation” with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The two leaders agreed to “immediately pause” the anticipated tariffs for one month and continue negotiations.

Sheinbaum confirmed the agreement, emphasizing Mexico’s dedication to reinforcing security along the 3,200-kilometer U.S.-Mexico border to stem drug trafficking. “We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty,” she shared on X. “Teams from both countries will work together on security and trade issues.”

Sheinbaum also mentioned that Trump pledged to curb the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico. “We are trade partners, and this collaboration is crucial for both nations,” she told reporters in Mexico City.

The announcements come after Trump’s executive orders on Saturday, which imposed additional tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, drawing widespread opposition and immediate retaliations. The 30-day pause aims to facilitate continued negotiations and strengthen partnerships on critical issues like trade deficits, border security, and the fight against fentanyl trafficking.
