M56 Earthquake Hits Offshore Guatemala Emsc

Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Off Guatemalan Coast

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Guatemala on Wednesday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The quake occurred at a depth of 58 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.

Residents along the coastal regions reported feeling moderate shaking, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Local authorities are assessing the situation and monitoring for any potential aftershocks.

The region sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate movements. Earthquakes are common in this zone, and residents are urged to stay informed about safety procedures.

“It was a sudden jolt; everything started shaking,” said Maria López, a resident of Puerto San José. “We ran outside and are now waiting for updates from officials.”

Authorities recommend staying alert and following instructions from emergency services. The EMSC will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
