South Korea’s Foreign Affairs and Trade ministries have blocked access to DeepSeek, according to a report by Yonhap on Wednesday. The move comes amid increasing concerns over data security and potential information leaks.
DeepSeek, an advanced search tool, has been gaining popularity worldwide for its ability to provide rapid, comprehensive search results. However, officials within the South Korean government have expressed worries that the platform may expose sensitive information or be vulnerable to cyber threats.
“We have decided to restrict access to DeepSeek within the ministries to safeguard confidential data,” an unnamed official told Yonhap. “Ensuring the security of government information is our top priority.”
The decision highlights growing apprehension over the use of foreign technology platforms in government institutions. It also raises questions about how to balance innovation and accessibility with the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
Employees within the affected ministries will now be required to use alternative tools that have been vetted and approved by government cybersecurity agencies.
