M76 Quake Hits off Cayman Islands Usgs

Massive 7.6 Quake Strikes Near Cayman Islands; Tsunami Advisory Issued

A powerful magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck approximately 209 kilometers southwest of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which can amplify its effects on the surface.

In response, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami advisory for the northern coast of Honduras. Coastal communities are urged to stay vigilant and follow any instructions from local authorities.

There are currently no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. Emergency services are on high alert as assessments are underway to determine the full impact of the earthquake.

The Cayman Islands and surrounding regions are situated near tectonic plate boundaries, making them susceptible to seismic events. Earthquakes of this magnitude can cause strong shaking and potential hazards, especially in areas close to the epicenter.
