Western Union has suspended its U.S.-Cuba money transfer services following the reinstatement of sanctions against Cuba by the Trump administration. The decision has left many Cuban families worried about their financial futures, as they rely heavily on remittances from relatives in the United States.

For decades, remittances have been a lifeline for many on the island of Cuba, helping families cover basic necessities like food, housing, and healthcare. The sudden halt in money transfers means that countless families may struggle to make ends meet.

"My brother in Miami used to send us money every month," said Maria, a resident of Havana. "With Western Union shutting down, we don’t know how we’ll manage."

The move comes as part of a broader tightening of U.S. policies toward Cuba, reversing previous efforts to normalize relations. Critics argue that these actions disproportionately impact ordinary citizens rather than the government.

Alternatives to Western Union are limited, and the suspension highlights the challenges faced by families split between the two countries. Many are now searching for other ways to support their loved ones across borders.

"We hope that a solution can be found soon," Maria added. "Our families depend on it."
