At least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, lost their lives in a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday. The incident occurred when a sudden rush of passengers tried to board trains headed for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
Over a dozen others were injured in the chaos. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the crowds surged, leading to the devastating crush. Many were eager to reach the sacred event, resulting in overcrowded platforms and trains.
The Ministry of Railways announced that a high-level inquiry has been ordered into the “unfortunate incident.” Officials are working to determine the exact causes and implement measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep distress over the incident. “I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those affected by this tragedy,” he wrote on X.
