Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their home drought with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, thanks to an early goal from midfielder James Maddison. Back in the starting lineup after recovering from injury, Maddison tapped in a close-range rebound in the 13th minute, giving Spurs the lead in an action-packed match.
The win was Tottenham’s first home league victory in 105 days, easing the pressure on their Australian manager Ange Postecoglou. The victory moved Spurs above United into 12th place with 30 points in the Premier League standings.
Manchester United’s struggles continued under manager Ruben Amorim, who has now lost eight of the 14 league matches since taking charge at Old Trafford. United dropped to 15th place with 29 points, marking the first time since the 1989-90 season that they have suffered a league double defeat against Spurs.
Despite creating opportunities, United couldn’t capitalize, with forward Alejandro Garnacho missing a golden chance in the first half. After the match, Amorim remained hopeful, saying, “I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst. I am confident in my work. The place in the table is my worry; I am not worried about me.”
Tottenham’s injury issues are easing as key players return. Postecoglou welcomed back first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and playmaker Maddison into the starting lineup. He also had options on the bench with Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert, and Brennan Johnson all available.
In contrast, United’s challenges deepened with the news that versatile player Amad Diallo is likely out for the rest of the season. Their bench featured nine players aged 19 or under, highlighting the squad’s youth and inexperience.
“It was important we won today,” Postecoglou commented. “We’ve had it pretty tough for the past two and a half months. We feel, and I certainly feel, there’s a massive opportunity in the back half of the year.”
With 13 Premier League games remaining, both Spurs and United are looking to improve their positions. As favorites in the Europa League, they have much to play for in the coming weeks.
