China and Algeria Commit to Deepening Cooperation at G20 Meeting

At the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf on Friday. The two leaders pledged to deepen cooperation between China and Algeria across various fields.

Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the strong friendship between the two nations. He noted that Algeria has significant influence in Africa and has made special contributions to China’s restoration of its lawful seat in the United Nations.

“China attaches great importance to its relations with Algeria,” Wang said. “We support Algeria’s efforts to accelerate development and revitalization, and we are ready to work together to deepen cooperation in various fields.”

Ahmed Attaf expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the shared historical experiences and common values between Algeria and China. “Our friendship has created many precious historical memories,” he said.

Attaf recalled the successful visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to China in 2023, during which significant agreements were reached with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He noted that cooperation between the two countries has entered a fast-track phase, with China becoming Algeria’s largest trading partner.

“We welcome increased investment from China,” Attaf said. “Algeria is willing to work with China to implement practical initiatives and deepen collaboration, especially in emerging industries, to bring tangible benefits to our peoples.”

Both ministers agreed to consolidate political mutual trust and support each other in safeguarding their respective core interests. They also pledged to uphold the legitimate rights and interests of Global South countries and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world.
