Beijing, Tuesday — China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, has called on the UN Security Council to play a constructive role in promoting peace talks to resolve the Ukraine crisis. Speaking at a Security Council meeting on Monday, Fu emphasized the urgency of creating a favorable atmosphere for a political solution.
"At present, the Ukraine issue is at a critical juncture for a negotiated settlement," Fu stated. "We expect the international community to foster conditions conducive to peace and facilitate meaningful dialogue among all parties involved."
Highlighting the growing calls for a diplomatic resolution, Fu remarked, "The ultimate resolution of any conflict lies at the negotiation table. As we speak, the appeals for a negotiated settlement of the Ukraine issue are constantly increasing, and the window for peace is opening."
He underscored China’s support for all efforts dedicated to peace, including recent agreements to initiate peace talks. "Dialogue is better than confrontation, and talks are better than fights," Fu noted, expressing China’s readiness to contribute constructively to the peace process.
Fu also urged European nations to actively participate in pursuing peace. "Europe should play its part to jointly address the root causes of the crisis and find a balanced, effective, and sustainable security framework to achieve long-term stability on the continent," he said.
Emphasizing the concerns of the Global South, Fu added, "China stands ready to continue playing a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis, taking into consideration the concerns of the international community, especially those of the Global South."
On the same day, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution appealing for a swift end to the conflict and urging a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine. The U.S.-drafted resolution received ten votes in favor and five abstentions from France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia.
