Chinese tennis stars Buyunchaokete and Wang Xinyu shone at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, making significant strides in their respective singles matches on Wednesday.
In the men’s singles first round, Buyunchaokete secured a solid victory over American teenager Nishesh Basavareddy with a straight-set win of 7-5, 6-4. Demonstrating consistent dominance throughout the match, Buyunchaokete capitalized on three out of seven break points, while Basavareddy managed to break serve only once.
After the match, Buyunchaokete expressed his excitement and respect for his opponent. “I felt both nervous and excited since it’s my first time playing at Indian Wells, especially on the center court,” he said. “Basavareddy is a young Next Gen player. We know each other well and have practiced together during Challenger events. We both performed at a high level today. I just tried to enjoy the match and focus on my game. I’m proud of my performance.”
This victory not only marked Buyunchaokete’s first Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Masters win outside China but also ended a 10-match losing streak by Chinese players in recent Tour events. His next challenge will be facing Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the second round.
On the women’s side, Wang Xinyu showcased her prowess by defeating Egypt’s Mayar Sherif 6-4, 7-5, advancing to the second round. The first set saw Wang breaking ahead in the fourth game, but Sherif fought back to level the score. Wang regained momentum with two more breaks to claim the set.
The second set was a tightly contested battle, with both players holding serve until Wang seized a crucial break point in the twelfth game to secure the match. Wang will next face former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
The impressive performances by Buyunchaokete and Wang signal a rising presence of Chinese talent on the international tennis stage, igniting excitement among fans and aspiring players alike.
