Syria Sdf Strike Deal to Merge Institutions

Syrian Government and Kurdish SDF Unite to Merge Institutions in Historic Deal

In a landmark move towards national unity, the Syrian interim government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have agreed to merge all civil and military institutions under state control. The agreement, finalized on Monday in Damascus, aims to integrate the Kurdish-controlled northeast regions with the rest of the country after 14 years of devastating conflict.

Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF’s top commander, Mazloum Abdi, shook hands as they sealed the deal, which includes integrating oversight of border crossings, airports, and vital oil and gas fields. The accord also guarantees the rights of all Syrians and officially recognizes the Kurdish community as an integral part of Syria.

“This agreement represents a real opportunity to build a new Syria,” Abdi stated on X, expressing hope for justice and stability during this critical transitional phase. The nationwide ceasefire included in the deal offers protection for displaced Syrians returning home.

President al-Sharaa emphasized the significance of the merger in uniting the nation amidst recent violence against the Alawite minority in western Syria. He noted that such atrocities threaten efforts to reconcile and rebuild after years of turmoil.

While the integration of civil institutions is set to be implemented by the end of the year, details regarding the incorporation of SDF’s military operations into Syria’s defense ministry remain unresolved—a key sticking point in ongoing negotiations.

There has been no immediate response from Türkiye, a close ally of al-Sharaa, regarding the agreement. The international community watches cautiously, hopeful that this historic accord may pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
