Ex-President Duterte Arrives in Netherlands to Face ICC Charges
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte landed at Rotterdam The Hague Airport in the Netherlands on Wednesday afternoon. The 79-year-old is set to face charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his controversial “war on drugs” campaign.
Duterte was detained on Tuesday morning upon his return to Manila from abroad, following an arrest warrant issued by the ICC. Questioning the legitimacy of the warrant, he left Manila for The Hague, home to the ICC, on Tuesday night.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the ICC confirmed that Duterte has been surrendered to its custody. The charges stem from thousands of deaths during his anti-drug operations while in office, which human rights groups have heavily criticized.
Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte, his daughter, departed for the Netherlands on Wednesday morning. She had previously stated her intention to accompany her father to The Hague for the proceedings.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport, located northwest of Rotterdam, is approximately 20 kilometers from The Hague.
