Zelenskyy and Trump Set for Crucial Phone Talks on Ukraine Peace Efforts

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to hold a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday to discuss ongoing peace efforts in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy expressed hope that the discussion would cover “the details of the next steps” towards resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

“I will be in contact with President Trump today. We will discuss the details with him today, including the details of the next steps,” Zelenskyy said, as reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Zelenskyy also indicated his interest in learning more about President Trump’s recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I hope that President Trump will share details of his conversation with President Putin,” he added.

The forthcoming discussion between Zelenskyy and Trump comes after the White House announced that Trump and Putin had agreed on Tuesday that advancing peace in Ukraine would “begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on the implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire, and permanent peace.”

The conflict in eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014, has resulted in thousands of casualties and remains a significant point of tension between Russia and Western nations. Efforts to reach a lasting peace have been ongoing, with various international stakeholders involved in mediating the situation.

The scheduled call between Zelenskyy and Trump highlights the continued involvement of the United States in facilitating dialogue and seeking resolutions to the conflict. Young people and future leaders in the Global South are watching closely, as the outcomes could have broader implications for international relations and peace efforts worldwide.
