Boxing fans, rejoice! The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unanimously voted to include boxing in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. This decision ends years of uncertainty over the sport’s future in the Olympic Games.
The approval came during the 144th IOC Session, where the committee recognized the efforts of the newly formed governing body, World Boxing. IOC President Thomas Bach expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I thank you for the approval of having boxing back. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament.”
World Boxing, established in 2023, now boasts over 80 national federations as members. Its creation was a response to the IOC’s call for a new organization to replace the International Boxing Association (IBA), which lost its recognition due to governance and financial issues.
World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst celebrated the news: “This is a great day for boxers, boxing, and everyone connected with our sport at every level across the world. This outcome has been achieved by a massive team effort… and would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of all of the national federations, boxers, coaches, officials, and boxing leaders that have worked together to enable this to happen.”
Van der Vorst emphasized World Boxing’s commitment to the Olympic Movement, adding, “World Boxing understands that being part of the Olympic Games is a privilege, and not a right, and we are determined to be a trustworthy and reliable partner that will adhere to and uphold the values of the Olympic Movement.”
It’s important to note that only athletes whose national federations are members of World Boxing by the start of the qualification events for the 2028 Olympics will be eligible to compete in Los Angeles. This move ensures a level playing field and upholds the integrity of the sport.
The inclusion of boxing in the 2028 Olympics promises thrilling action and a platform for boxers worldwide to showcase their talent on one of the biggest stages in sports. Young fans and aspiring boxers can look forward to an exciting tournament that celebrates skill, determination, and the spirit of competition.
