A devastating road accident in northern Mexico has left 12 people dead and four others injured after a pickup truck plunged into a ravine on Sunday. The incident occurred in the mountainous Santiago area of Nuevo Leon state when the vehicle, carrying 16 occupants, fell approximately 120 meters, according to Civil Protection district director Erik Cavazos.
Eleven people lost their lives at the scene, while a minor passed away later at a hospital, Cavazos reported. The four survivors are currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the fall.
The accident also sparked a forest fire in the ravine, which authorities managed to contain shortly afterward. Officials are investigating the cause of the crash and have urged drivers to exercise caution on the region’s challenging mountain roads.
