Chinese Envoy Calls on Syria to Advance Inclusive Transition

Chinese Envoy Urges Syria to Embrace Inclusive Transition and Combat Terrorism

New York City, October 10th — China’s ambassador to the United Nations, Fu Cong, has called on Syria’s interim authorities to advance an inclusive political transition and take decisive action against terrorism. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Fu emphasized the importance of addressing recent violence and fostering unity in the war-torn nation.

The Syrian interim authorities have launched a one-month independent investigation following the tragic killing of civilians in the coastal regions of Latakia and Tartus. Since March 6th, widespread violence has resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,500 people, including more than 1,000 civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

“The inhumanity and brutality of these acts are outrageous,” Fu Cong stated. “We hope that the Syrian interim authorities will carry out their investigation in a transparent and responsible manner. This is crucial for the international community’s assessment of the credibility of the political transition in Syria.”

The UN Security Council has condemned the mass killings and urged the protection of all Syrians. Fu highlighted China’s acknowledgment of recent measures taken to advance Syria’s political transition. He called for the government to “earnestly deliver on their commitments” by engaging in broad dialogue and consultation with all sectors of society to achieve genuine inclusiveness.

Expressing concern over new terrorist threats, Fu underscored the immediate danger posed by foreign terrorist fighters who have moved across Syria, particularly in the aftermath of changes in the country’s situation. “They have been involved in the mistreatment and killing of civilians in the coastal areas. This is yet another reminder of the need to remain highly vigilant against terrorist forces in Syria,” he said.

Fu urged the interim authorities to fulfill their counter-terrorism obligations by taking decisive measures against all terrorist organizations designated by the Security Council, including groups like the Turkistan Islamic Party. He reaffirmed the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

Condemning recent airstrikes against Syria, Fu called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. “China has been closely following the situation in Syria. We sincerely hope that, with the help of the international community, Syria will steadily advance its political transition and restore peace and stability at an early date,” he concluded.
