Ukraine and Russia have reached a tentative agreement to cease maritime attacks and attacks on energy infrastructure following talks facilitated by the United States in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The agreement includes a halt on assaults targeting oil refineries, power plants, hydroelectric dams, and fuel storage facilities, among others. The ceasefire on energy infrastructure is set to last for 30 days, starting from March 18, with the possibility of mutual extension.
Russia has stated it will adhere to the Black Sea agreements in return for the reinstatement of Russian banks within the international financial system. Additionally, the United States has agreed to lift certain sanctions on Moscow, particularly those affecting agricultural and fertilizer exports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the agreements would take effect immediately. He also called for more weapons for Ukraine and urged the international community to impose further sanctions on Russia should any violations occur.
The Kremlin noted that if either party violates the terms of the agreement, the other is not obligated to honor the ceasefire.
The ceasefire is seen as a significant step toward de-escalation of tensions in the region, with hopes that it may pave the way for more comprehensive peace talks in the future.
