Gaza City (March 21, 2023) — Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif al-Qanou was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday evening, according to reports from Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV. The airstrike targeted his tent in Jabalia, located in northern Gaza.
The same attack reportedly wounded several others, while separate strikes in Gaza City and the southern region of Khan Younis claimed the lives of at least seven people, medical sources confirmed.
In recent developments, the Israeli military has intensified its operations in Gaza. Earlier this week, Ismail Barhoum and Salah al-Bardawil, both senior members of Hamas’ 20-member political office, were also killed in Israeli strikes. To date, 11 members of Hamas’ decision-making body have lost their lives since the conflict escalated in late 2023, according to sources within Hamas.
The resurgence of hostilities follows Israel’s decision last week to end a two-month ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes were ordered after Hamas rejected proposals to extend the ceasefire. He has warned of further action unless Hamas releases the remaining hostages it holds.
The Gaza Health Ministry reports that at least 830 people, more than half of whom are women and children, have been killed since major military strikes resumed on March 18.
The escalating conflict has raised international concerns, with calls for de-escalation and the protection of civilians growing louder from the global community.
