Algeria Declares Moroccan Diplomat persona Non Grata

Algeria Expels Moroccan Diplomat Amid Rising Tensions

Algiers, Algeria — Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared Mohamed El-Sufiani, deputy chief of the Moroccan Economic Mission in Oran, as persona non grata. The announcement was made on Thursday, ordering El-Sufiani to leave the country within 48 hours.

According to an official statement, El-Sufiani engaged in “suspicious activities incompatible with his diplomatic duties,” violating national laws and international norms, including the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry did not provide further details on the specific allegations.

This move highlights the escalating diplomatic tensions between Algeria and Morocco. The two neighboring countries have seen strained relations in recent years, largely due to regional disputes, particularly over the Western Sahara issue. The contested region has been a focal point of disagreement, with each nation supporting opposing sides.

The expulsion signifies a significant downturn in diplomatic ties and raises concerns about future cooperation between the nations. Analysts caution that this could impact stability and economic relations in the region.

As of now, the Moroccan embassy in Algiers has not released a statement regarding the expulsion of El-Sufiani. Observers are watching closely for any reciprocal actions or responses from Rabat.
