Israeli forces have struck a significant blow against Hamas by killing its spokesperson, Abdul Latif al-Qanou, in a dawn airstrike in northern Gaza on Thursday. The Israeli military confirmed the operation, describing al-Qanou as “one of Hamas’ key inciters” who utilized media platforms to spread propaganda, psychological terror, and misinformation about Hamas’ activities within and beyond Gaza.
The deadly strike hit al-Qanou’s tent in the Jabalia refugee camp, a densely populated area in northern Gaza. According to Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television, several others were injured in the attack, citing local health officials. Hamas condemned the assassination, vowing that such actions would only strengthen their resolve and resistance efforts.
“This heinous crime will not go unpunished,” a Hamas spokesperson stated. “Our commitment to defending our people and our land remains unwavering.”
Al-Qanou’s death marks the latest in a series of targeted killings of high-profile Hamas figures by Israel. The Israeli military has intensified its operations in Gaza following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement that had been in place since January 19. Hostilities resumed on March 18 after both sides accused each other of violating the truce.
Since the escalation, Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes and ground operations across southern, northern, and central Gaza. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a rising death toll, with Gaza-based health authorities reporting over 855 fatalities.
The renewed violence has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, drawing international concern. Efforts to restore calm have so far been unsuccessful, with both sides entrenched in their positions.
As tensions continue to escalate, residents in Gaza face increasing uncertainty and hardship. The international community has called for restraint and a return to negotiations to prevent further loss of life.
