A powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread devastation with over 1,600 fatalities and more than 3,400 injuries. The disaster has prompted a swift response from the international community, with China taking a leading role in relief efforts.
The Chinese government dispatched 82 rescuers and over 20 tonnes of emergency supplies to the affected areas. Teams from Yunnan Province, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Shenzhen City have mobilized, bringing search-and-rescue equipment, medical kits, and essential supplies. The Chinese Red Cross has also contributed tents, blankets, folding beds, and relief kits to support families left homeless by the quake.
Beyond China’s significant contribution, global aid has poured into Myanmar. The United Nations allocated $5 million for emergency relief to assist in immediate recovery operations. Malaysia sent a 50-person rescue team, while Singapore deployed 80 personnel and four rescue dogs to aid in search-and-rescue missions. New Zealand pledged $1.14 million to support ongoing recovery efforts.
