IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi Announces Bid for UN Secretary-General

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has declared his intention to run for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. The news, reported by Kommersant, comes as the international community prepares for next year’s election.

Grossi, an Argentine diplomat with extensive experience in nuclear non-proliferation and international relations, has led the IAEA since 2019. His announcement signals a significant shift in the upcoming UN leadership race, potentially challenging the current Secretary-General, António Guterres of Portugal, who has held the position since 2017.

In his statement, Grossi emphasized the importance of global cooperation and the UN’s role in addressing pressing issues such as climate change, nuclear security, and international peace. “Our world is at a crossroads,” he said. “We need strong leadership to navigate the challenges ahead and to ensure a safer, more prosperous future for all.”

The election for the next UN Secretary-General is scheduled for next year. If elected, Grossi would bring his vast experience from the IAEA to the UN’s top post, potentially influencing the organization’s approach to international diplomacy and security.

António Guterres has served two terms as Secretary-General, focusing on climate action, sustainable development, and conflict resolution. It remains to be seen whether he will seek a third term or step aside for new leadership.

The announcement has sparked discussions among UN member states and international observers, who are keen to see how Grossi’s candidacy will shape the future of the organization.
