Manchester City’s star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has announced that he will leave the Premier League club at the end of the 2024-25 season. The 33-year-old Belgian shared the news on Friday, marking the end of a decade-long chapter with the club.
Since joining Manchester City from German side Wolfsburg in 2015, De Bruyne has been instrumental in the team’s success. He has lifted 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2023. Twice named the Premier League Player of the Season, De Bruyne is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the league’s history.
In a heartfelt message on Instagram, De Bruyne wrote, “I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player. Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here—and you deserve to hear it from me first. Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter.”
De Bruyne’s departure has been the subject of speculation for months, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Injuries have plagued him in recent years, but he has remained central to City’s successes.
“Manchester City will bid an emotional farewell to Kevin De Bruyne this summer when his contract expires, bringing an end to a glittering 10-year period at the club,” the club said in a statement. “The club and all of our fans will now take the time to deliver a fitting tribute and farewell to one of the greatest players to ever play in the Premier League.”
Despite a challenging season, De Bruyne has the opportunity to add another trophy to his collection, with City’s FA Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest scheduled for April 26.
Over his time with Manchester City, De Bruyne has made 413 appearances across all competitions, scoring 106 goals and providing 174 assists. His remarkable vision and playmaking abilities have placed him second on the Premier League’s all-time assists chart with 118, behind only Ryan Giggs.
As fans prepare to bid farewell to a legend, the football world will be watching to see what the next chapter holds for Kevin De Bruyne.
