Heatwave Hits Indian Capital Other Parts

Severe Heatwave Strikes Delhi and Beyond Ahead of Peak Summer

Weeks ahead of peak summer, a severe heatwave has gripped India’s capital, Delhi, and several other parts of the country, prompting authorities to issue alerts across multiple states.

On Monday, Delhi recorded its highest temperature of the season, with the mercury hitting 40.2 degrees Celsius (104.4 degrees Fahrenheit) at Safdarjung—5.1 degrees above normal. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that maximum temperatures in Delhi are likely to range between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius throughout the week.

According to the IMD, a heatwave is declared in the plains when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius and is at least 4.5 degrees above normal. The early onset of such high temperatures signals an intense summer ahead for large parts of the country.

The IMD has also highlighted that around 21 cities across the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, and Maharashtra are expected to record high temperatures in the coming days. In the regions of Saurashtra and Kutch, a red alert has been issued due to the likelihood of extreme heat, advising residents to take necessary precautions.

The onset of the heatwave raises concerns over an increase in heatstroke cases. Authorities have advised people to avoid heat exposure, stay hydrated, and remain in cool places whenever possible.

As temperatures soar, communities are bracing for the challenges ahead. The early heatwave not only affects daily life but also poses risks to vulnerable populations. Staying informed and prepared is crucial during this period.
