UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning about the escalating trade tensions worldwide, stating that “nobody wins in a trade war.” Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Guterres responded to questions regarding the recent decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a minimum 10% tariff on imports from nearly every country.
Guterres emphasized the severe negative impacts such trade conflicts can have on the global economy, particularly on vulnerable developing nations. He expressed deep concern that rising tariffs could be “devastating” for countries already facing economic challenges.
“I am particularly worried about the impact on vulnerable developing countries,” Guterres said. “A recession would have dramatic consequences, especially for the poorest people in the world. We must work collectively to prevent such outcomes.”
The UN chief urged international leaders to seek cooperative solutions and highlighted the importance of open dialogue to resolve trade disputes. He stressed that global economic stability depends on collaborative efforts and mutual understanding among nations.
