The roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic has claimed at least 225 lives, with several victims succumbing to their injuries in hospitals on Saturday, April 12.
The tragedy has shaken the entire country, but the town of Haina has been hit the hardest, its community forever changed.
Among the victims were members of ‘Los Dorados,’ a close-knit group of seniors who had gathered that night to celebrate decades of friendship. What began as an evening of music and reunion turned into one of the deadliest disasters in recent memory.
One survivor, Maria Torres, recounted the horrifying moments when the roof began to crumble. “We were dancing and laughing, and then suddenly, everything went dark,” she said. “I heard screams and felt debris falling all around me. It was pure chaos.”
Emergency responders worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble. Hospitals in the region were overwhelmed as they treated hundreds of injured partygoers.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, with initial reports suggesting structural failures due to recent renovations. The government has declared a period of national mourning, and communities across the country are coming together to support the victims’ families.
“This tragedy has touched us all,” said local official Juan Ramirez. “We must ensure that something like this never happens again.”
For the people of Haina, the road to healing will be long. The loss of ‘Los Dorados’ has left a deep void in the community. “They were the heart of our town,” said resident Carlos Lopez. “Their legacy of friendship and joy will not be forgotten.”
