Iran Calls for Swift Progress in U.S. Talks, Rejects Delays

Iran is pushing for quick progress in its talks with the United States, aiming to avoid any delays in finding a diplomatic solution. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi shared on Sunday that Iran is serious about the negotiations, which could have big impacts on the country’s economy and its young population.

During a meeting with Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Gharibabadi underscored the importance of lifting sanctions. “All sanctions should be lifted in a way that benefits the Iranian people economically,” he stated, highlighting how relief could improve everyday life for many.

He also made it clear that Iran won’t back down on its right to enrich uranium, calling it a non-negotiable “red line.” This stance is crucial in the discussions, as it relates to Iran’s nuclear program—a topic that’s been at the center of international attention.

The talks in Rome on April 19, as well as previous discussions in Muscat, focus on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This deal originally involved major global players like Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States, aiming to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in return for lifting economic sanctions.

Since the U.S. withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and reinstated sanctions, Iran has stepped back from some of its commitments. Now, both sides are back at the negotiating table, with hopes of easing tensions and improving prospects for the future.
