Twenty-seven people, including ten school children, were injured on Friday when a bus lost control and veered off the road in Mahiyanganaya, located in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province.
According to the police, the accident occurred due to a failure in the bus’s braking system. The vehicle was traveling along a mountainous route when the brakes malfunctioned, causing the driver to lose control.
Police spokesperson Buddhika Manatunga confirmed that all the injured were taken to a regional hospital for treatment. “Ten of the injured are school children,” Manatunga stated.
Local authorities are investigating the incident. The crash highlights ongoing concerns about vehicle safety standards and maintenance in the region.
Residents rushed to the scene to assist the victims before emergency services arrived. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as people worked together to help the injured passengers.
The condition of the injured passengers has not been disclosed, but hospital officials indicate that some have sustained serious injuries.
