Chinese Films Breaking Barriers Globally, Says UK Distributor

Chinese films are making significant strides in international markets, according to Cedric Behrel, co-founder of the independent UK distributor Trinity CineAsia. In an exclusive interview during the 15th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), Behrel shared his insights on the global rise of Chinese cinema.

Trinity CineAsia holds theatrical distribution rights to “Ne Zha 2” across 37 European countries. Behrel noted that the strong box office performance of Chinese films is helping them break into international markets. “As international audiences increasingly have different needs when going to cinemas, there is a real opportunity for Chinese films to go global,” he said.

Beyond blockbusters and fantasy films, Behrel highlighted the potential for smart comedies and dramas that depict modern life in China. Films like “Upstream” and “Her Story” could open new windows for international audiences to better understand China. “These stories provide a unique perspective that resonates with audiences worldwide,” he added.

Behrel’s remarks underscore the growing interest in diverse narratives from the Chinese mainland, reflecting a broader trend of cultural exchange through cinema.
