Sabalenka and Swiatek Power into Madrid Open Semifinals

Top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek showcased their resilience as they advanced to the Madrid Open semifinals on Wednesday.

World No.1 Sabalenka overcame a tough challenge from Marta Kostyuk, edging out the Ukrainian 7-6(4), 7-6(7). In a match disrupted by rain and played under cold, breezy conditions, Sabalenka needed to stay mentally strong. She said, “Honestly, that was a battle and conditions were incredibly tough. It wasn’t about tennis, it was about the way you handled your emotions. I think I did really well and I’m super proud I was able to handle myself in such a difficult situation.”

The match saw Sabalenka hit 48 unforced errors, but she managed to save three set points in the second-set tiebreak after a brief rain delay. She will next face Elina Svitolina, who cruised past Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima 6-2, 6-1 in just 52 minutes. Svitolina extended her winning streak to 11 matches and remains undefeated on clay this season.

Meanwhile, second seed Swiatek mounted a remarkable comeback against Madison Keys, winning 0-6, 6-3, 6-2. After dropping the first set without winning a game, Swiatek adjusted her game to secure victory. She will face Coco Gauff in the semifinals, who defeated Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-1.

Swiatek has now reached her third consecutive Madrid Open semifinal and continues her quest for her first title of the season. Reflecting on her match, she noted the importance of adapting mid-game to overcome challenges.

The upcoming semifinals promise thrilling encounters as the top players battle for a spot in the final.
