Jeddah, Saudi Arabia — Al Ahli claimed their first-ever AFC Champions League Elite title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in front of 60,000 ecstatic fans at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Saturday.

The Jeddah-based club, brimming with international talent, completed an unbeaten run in the tournament, marking a historic achievement for both the team and its supporters.

Al Ahli took control early, with Brazilian winger Galeno breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute. Assisted by Roberto Firmino, Galeno, who joined from Porto in January for a reported $55 million, curled a spectacular shot into the top corner.

Just three minutes later, Firmino provided another crucial pass, crossing from the right to find Franck Kessie. The former AC Milan and Barcelona midfielder headed home from close range, doubling Al Ahli’s lead before halftime.

Firmino’s impressive performance earned him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. The former Liverpool star, along with teammates Riyad Mahrez and Edouard Mendy, brought a wealth of experience, each having won the UEFA Champions League prior to joining Al Ahli.

Kawasaki Frontale, who had stunned Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in the semifinals, struggled to penetrate Al Ahli’s solid defense in the second half. While Riyad Mahrez came close to adding a third goal with a late attempt, the score remained 2-0 as the final whistle blew.

“We are so proud,” said Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. “Once we knew that the final eight would be in Jeddah, it was our goal to be champions in front of our fans. Since I came here 18 months ago, they have supported us so much. As I said when I signed, it was to make history, to win trophies, and to make this club as big as it was before.”

The victory makes Al Ahli the third Saudi club to win the Asian Champions League, following in the footsteps of local rivals Al Ittihad and Riyadh’s Al Hilal. The triumph also underscores the significant impact of international stars joining Saudi clubs, elevating the level of competition in the region.

The atmosphere in Jeddah was electric throughout the tournament’s final stages, all held in the city. Al Ahli’s fans played a pivotal role, providing unwavering support that the players acknowledged as a driving force behind their success.

The win not only cements Al Ahli’s status in Asian football but also inspires young fans across the Global South, showcasing the possibilities that arise from dedication, talent, and community support.
