Sabalenka Sweeps Past Gauff to Win Madrid Open for 20th Career Title

Aryna Sabalenka Triumphs Over Coco Gauff for Third Madrid Open Crown

Aryna Sabalenka showcased her dominance on the clay courts of Madrid, defeating Coco Gauff in straight sets to claim her third Madrid Open title and the 20th trophy of her career.

The World No. 1 from Belarus powered through the match with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over the fourth-ranked American. Sabalenka’s aggressive play secured her a strong start, taking the first set with ease.

Gauff fought back in the second set, using a variety of shots to challenge Sabalenka. However, the Belarusian held her nerve in the tiebreaker, preventing a comeback and sealing the win.

With this triumph, Sabalenka ties Petra Kvitova’s record of three Madrid Open titles, solidifying her position at the top of women’s tennis. This victory also marks her third championship this season, following wins in Brisbane and Miami.

The match leveled the head-to-head record between the two stars, each now holding five victories against the other. Gauff, who was aiming to rise to World No. 2 with a win, had only dropped one set throughout the tournament until facing Sabalenka.

“It was a really tough match,” Sabalenka admitted after the win. “At the end of the second set, it was really intense, and I was very emotional. I am happy I was able to handle my emotions.”

Despite missing a championship point on a break chance in the second set, Sabalenka remained focused. She overcame her frustrations and clinched her tour-leading 31st win of the season.

Gauff’s impressive record in finals now stands at nine wins from 11 attempts. As both players continue to excel, the rivalry between Sabalenka and Gauff promises to be a highlight in the tennis world for years to come.
