Singapore’s PAP Wins Election with Increased Vote Share
Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has scored a significant victory in the latest general election. The party increased its popular vote to 65.57%, up from 61.24% in 2020, according to official results released early Sunday.
The PAP secured 87 out of 97 seats in the parliament and will govern 30 of the city-state’s 33 constituencies. This strong showing reinforces the PAP’s long-standing leadership since Singapore gained independence in 1965.
This election was especially noteworthy as it was the first led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took over from Lee Hsien Loong in May 2024. Wong’s fresh leadership seems to have boosted the party’s appeal, particularly among younger voters concerned about issues like employment opportunities and technological advancement.
The main opposition, the Workers’ Party (WP), maintained its 10 seats, holding onto its constituencies in eastern Singapore. While they didn’t gain additional seats, the WP saw an increased vote share in some areas, indicating growing support and a desire for diverse voices in parliament.
Analysts believe the PAP’s decisive win reflects voters’ confidence in the party’s ability to navigate global challenges, such as economic uncertainties and trade tensions. Both Prime Minister Wong and former Prime Minister Lee emphasized the importance of stable leadership in facing external shocks that could impact Singapore’s open economy.
The election saw an impressive turnout of 92.47%, highlighting the engagement of Singaporeans in the political process. With over 2.4 million votes cast, the high participation underscores the vibrancy of the nation’s democracy.
