U.S. Florists Struggle with Rising Costs Amid Soaring Tariffs
As Americans prepare for special occasions like Mother’s Day, graduations, and weddings, florists across the United States are facing mounting challenges due to soaring tariffs. The increasing costs are putting pressure on small businesses, leaving shop owners to navigate a delicate balance between maintaining profits and keeping loyal customers.
Most flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Canada, the Netherlands, and Mexico. Additionally, a significant portion of packaging materials comes from China, according to the United States Census Bureau and the White House. The tariffs imposed on these imports have led to a spike in prices for both flowers and packaging supplies.
“We want to provide beautiful arrangements for our customers without breaking their budgets,” said Maria Lopez, a florist in Miami. “But with the rising costs, it’s becoming more difficult to do that and keep our business afloat.”
Florists now face a tough decision: absorb the increased costs and endure lower profits, or raise prices and risk losing customers who have supported them for years. This predicament is especially challenging for small, family-owned shops that rely heavily on community support.
