When 28-year-old Zhao Xintong from China lifted the World Snooker Championship trophy, he didn’t just win a title—he made history as Asia’s first snooker world champion.
After defeating 50-year-old Mark Williams of Wales in a thrilling final, Zhao was asked how long it took him to reach this pinnacle. His answer was humble yet profound: “20 years.”
A Rising Star
Zhao picked up a cue at the tender age of eight. His coach quickly recognized his exceptional talent, stating that Zhao might be the most accurate player in the world for his age. By 13, he had already finished as runner-up at the Chinese national youth tournament.
In 2010, Zhao claimed his first title at home in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong province. His professional debut came in 2016, but he faced challenges due to his aggressive yet inconsistent style. Despite being relegated twice, Zhao’s determination saw him achieve back-to-back promotions.
Breaking Through
His first major breakthrough arrived in 2021 when he won the UK Championship, defeating seasoned players like John Higgins and Luca Brecel. The victory propelled him into the global spotlight. A year later, he triumphed at the German Masters in an all-Chinese final against Yan Bingtao, rising to world No. 9.
Overcoming Adversity
In 2023, Zhao faced the toughest period of his career when he was suspended for 20 months. Reflecting on this setback, Zhao said the experience taught him humility and deepened his appreciation for the sport. “It made me realize what snooker truly means to me,” he shared.
The Comeback Story
Returning to the table in September 2024, Zhao was unstoppable. He clinched three straight Q-Tour titles, securing his qualification for the World Championship. At the iconic Crucible Theatre, Zhao showcased his refined skills, defeating Jak Jones, compatriot Lei Peifan, Chris Wakelin, and snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan before his decisive win over Williams.
“This journey has been about perseverance and passion,” Zhao remarked after his victory. “I hope my story inspires young players around the world to chase their dreams.”
