Violence Escalates: 13 Indian Civilians Killed by Pakistani Fire in Poonch
India’s government reported on Thursday that 13 civilians lost their lives in alleged ceasefire violations by Pakistani forces along the de facto border. The surge in violence comes on the heels of Indian military strikes, triggering a tense standoff between the two nations.
According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, all civilian casualties occurred in the town of Poonch, a region nestled near the Line of Control that divides the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In addition to the fatalities, 59 others were injured, most of whom are local residents.
The Indian Army confirmed that one of its soldiers was also killed on Wednesday during shelling by Pakistani forces in Poonch, bringing the total death toll on the Indian side to 14.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have been high, with both sides accusing each other of violating ceasefire agreements. The recent escalation has sparked concerns among the international community, urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further casualties.
Local residents in Poonch are reeling from the impact of the shelling. “We were going about our daily lives when suddenly shells started raining down,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous. “People are scared and uncertain about what comes next.”
The governments of both countries have a history of contentious relations, particularly over the region of Kashmir, which both claim in full but administer in part. The latest incidents underscore the fragile peace in the area and the potential for conflicts to escalate rapidly.
As the situation develops, many hope for a de-escalation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic efforts to resolve longstanding disputes.
