A recent online poll has revealed that many people in the United Kingdom and the United States are concerned about President Donald Trump’s unpredictability in trade deals. The survey suggests that a significant number of young Britons consider China to be a more reliable trading partner than the U.S.
Conducted by London-based pollster Public First for Politico, the poll found that less than one-third of UK respondents and 44% of Americans believe Trump would adhere to the terms outlined in a potential U.S.-UK trade agreement. Nearly half of American respondents, including a quarter of his own supporters, cited Trump’s unpredictability as the biggest obstacle to negotiations between the two nations.
In the UK, the sentiment was particularly strong among young people. A majority of British respondents under the age of 34 expressed that China is a more stable and dependable trade partner compared to the U.S. Overall, 42% of British participants favored China in this regard.
“China is looking a lot better these days, given that they’re not unilaterally and without provocation lashing out at even folks they thought were their closest allies and trading partners,” said Scott Lincicome, vice president of general economics at the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute, in an interview with Politico.
The poll surveyed approximately 2,000 adults in the UK and the U.S. between April 23 and 27.
