Russia Ukraine Agree to Exchange 1000 Pows Each Ukrainian Minister

Russia and Ukraine Agree to Swap 1,000 Prisoners Each

In a significant step toward easing tensions, Russia and Ukraine have agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each. The agreement was reached during talks held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Friday, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who announced the news on Ukrainian television.

Russia’s chief negotiator, Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, expressed optimism about the progress made. “Overall, we are satisfied with the results and ready to continue contacts,” Medinsky told state TV reporters. He indicated that future negotiations could focus on a potential ceasefire once both sides have shared their proposals.

Medinsky also acknowledged Ukraine’s request for direct talks between the nations’ leaders, suggesting that Moscow is considering the possibility. While another round of discussions in Istanbul isn’t currently scheduled, a senior Ukrainian official hinted that further talks could happen if Russia’s stance evolves. “If they receive other instructions from Moscow, then it is possible that something will happen today,” the source said, noting that “so far it is not planned.”

The prisoner exchange marks the first direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in years and offers a glimmer of hope for de-escalation in the region. Observers are watching closely to see if these developments will lead to lasting peace between the neighboring countries.
