Malaysia Slams Israels Gaza atrocities Ahead of Asean Summit

Malaysia Condemns Gaza ‘Atrocities’ Ahead of ASEAN Summit

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia’s Foreign Minister on Sunday condemned the ongoing violence in Gaza, describing the situation as a series of “atrocities” that highlight “indifference and double standards” toward the Palestinian people.

“These actions are a direct result of the erosion of the sanctity of international law,” the minister said during a meeting with counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “The atrocities committed against the Palestinian people continue to reflect indifference and double standards. ASEAN cannot remain silent.”

The remarks come ahead of the ASEAN summit set to begin on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, as global concerns grow over intensified military campaigns in Gaza. The recent escalation has drawn widespread international criticism, with increasing calls for more humanitarian aid to reach the affected region.

Israel has faced mounting pressure after only partially lifting a blockade imposed earlier this year, limiting essential supplies and aid to Gaza. The conflict, which escalated in October 2023, has led to significant humanitarian challenges.

Malaysia, holding the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN, has historically shown strong support for the Palestinian cause. The majority-Muslim nation does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, and public sentiment heavily favors Palestinians.

Since the conflict intensified, Kuala Lumpur has directed over $10 million in donations and humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza. In February, foreign ministers from the 10-member ASEAN association reiterated their longstanding support for Palestinian rights.

The ASEAN summit is expected to address the crisis, among other regional issues, as member nations consider collective actions to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
