Manchester United wrapped up their tumultuous 2024-25 Premier League season with a controversial 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Despite the win, the Red Devils finished 15th in the league—their lowest position in the modern era and just three spots above the relegation zone.
After a goalless first half, substitute Amad Diallo broke the deadlock in the 76th minute with a precise header, giving United a much-needed lead. Christian Eriksen secured the win with a penalty in the 87th minute following a contentious decision that left Villa fuming.
In the aftermath, United’s coach Ruben Amorim addressed the fans with an apology. “I want to apologize for this season. I know you are really disappointed with me and the team,” said the 40-year-old Portuguese manager. “We are very grateful for your support during the season, and I know it was really hard in many games.”
Amorim sought to instill hope for the future, adding, “Now we have to make a choice: do we stay stuck in the past because this season is over, or do we stick together and move forward? In my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I told you, ‘The storm is coming.'”
While the victory provided a momentary lift for United, it dealt a significant blow to Aston Villa, who finished sixth and missed out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season. Villa’s manager Unai Emery expressed his frustration over a disallowed goal, saying, “The TV is clear with the move, but of course we have to accept it. It was a mistake. A big mistake.”
Meanwhile, the top five teams—Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle United—alongside UEFA Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur, will compete in the Champions League next season.
