Six Die in Switzerland Weekend Mountain Accidents

Six Climbers Die in Swiss Alpine Tragedy Over the Weekend

Zurich, Switzerland — A tragic weekend unfolded in the Swiss Alps as six people lost their lives in separate mountain accidents, authorities reported on Sunday.

Near the renowned resort town of Zermatt, five individuals were found dead on the slopes of the Rimpfischhorn mountain. Rescuers were alerted after climbers noticed abandoned skis near the summit on Saturday. A helicopter search led to the discovery of the bodies, according to a statement from Swiss police.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident. The Rimpfischhorn, standing at an elevation of 4,199 meters, is a popular destination for backcountry skiers seeking challenging terrains.

In a separate incident in the Bern canton, a 29-year-old climber was killed in an avalanche on the Morgenhorn mountain. Two other climbers caught in the avalanche were rescued and are recovering from minor injuries in the hospital, police said.

Outdoor sports, especially in the majestic but unpredictable Swiss mountains, are a beloved pastime. However, they come with inherent risks. The Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanches reported that, during the current winter season from October 1, 2024, to May 17, 2025, a total of 15 people have lost their lives in avalanches across the country.

This latest tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the power of nature and the importance of safety precautions when enjoying mountain activities.
